Notes: Winter Card Show at the Ballpark; Shop Burglary; High-End Orr Memorabilia, More
The season is still a few months off but there will be a crowd of collectors at the home ballpark of the Charlotte Knights next month.
The AAA team of the Chicago White Sox is partnering with a local sports card business to host the ballpark’s first-ever card show on Saturday, January 8 from 9 AM to 4 PM.
The event, which will feature 100 vendor tables, will be held inside the Diamonds Direct Luxury Lounge, located on the third floor of Truist Field. Admission to the event will be $5 for adults and free for children 12 years old and under.
“The card-collecting hobby is very hot right now and I can’t think of a more appropriate place to welcome sports fans in the Charlotte area then to one of the nicest venues in all of sports,” stated stated Burke McKinney, BM Sports Cards, which is co-hosting the show.
The latest overnight card shop burglary took place in Sandy, UT where a local TV station reports Crave Collectibles was broken into early Tuesday morning.
The only graded full ticket from Bobby Orr’s “flying goal” that gave the Boston Bruins the 1970 Stanley Cup championship is coming to Classic Auctions’ next catalog.
The goal is one of the most famous moments in hockey history thanks to a remarkable action photo of the moment Orr’s shot lit the lamp in overtime to beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3, ending a 29-year championship drought.
Meanwhile, Collectable announced it will be offering investors the opportunity to own shares of a game-worn Orr jersey from his historic 1970-71 season.
Orr won the Hart and Norris trophies that season, registering the best offensive numbers of his career, scoring a career-high 139 points including 102 assists.
The jersey was sold in February through Classic Auctions for $209,455. Since then, it has been photo-matched to an on-ice image and Collectable’s IPO price will be $399,000.
Shares of the jersey will be offered for $10 each on Sunday, December 26.
A rare game-worn jersey from the 1952 US Olympic hockey team is up for sale through MeiGray. On consignment from a private collector, the red, white and blue wool sweater was worn by Ken Yackel, who was one of Team USA’s top scorers in the tournament.
The US won the silver medal during the games in Oslo, Norway.
NBA Auctions continues to sell Opening Night jerseys from multiple teams. Among the latest: the #1 jersey donned by 2020 number one pick Anthony Edwards in the Timberwolves’ game against the Rockets on October 20.
Edwards scored 29 points in the season opening win.
